A Massachusetts judge has found Michelle Carter guilty of involuntary manslaughter after, prosecutors say, the then-teenager sent a fellow teenager text messages that urged him to commit suicide. Juvenile Court Judge Lawrence Moniz decided the case, which Carter had opted to be heard by a judge rather than a jury. Even before Moniz read his verdict Friday, Carter, 20, was weeping and holding a tissue in the courtroom.

Michelle Carter was sentenced to 15 months in jail in for her role in the death of Conrad Roy III, but the judge allowed her to remain free while she appealed in state court. A lawyer for Carter had argued the year-old should stay out of jail while her defense team takes her case to the U. Supreme Court. But a judge ruled Monday that she should start her sentence.

Carter, now 20, was 17 when the year-old Roy died of carbon monoxide poisoning in his pickup truck in a store parking lot in Fairhaven. She is charged with involuntary manslaughter. He also said Carter had likely deleted some messages from her phone she had sent to Roy. Mattapoisett Patrolman Justin King said he found Roy with a swollen and cut face once while responding to an assault report. The prosecution has rested.
